The Trump administration shelved a 17-page CDC report containing step-by-step instructions for local authorities on how and when to reopen restaurants, mass transit, theaters, schools, daycares, and other public places during the ongoing pandemic. The decision reportedly came after intense lobbying on behalf of businesses and churches, but White House officials say the guidance was “too prescriptive.” A CDC official said scientists were told the report “would never see the light of day.”

Even so, more than half of U.S. states that are loosening lockdowns have yet to fully control their virus outbreaks and risk a spike in new cases and avoidable deaths. Trump has been aggressively pushing for states to reopen and said that Americans should be ready to accept a certain amount of illness and death.
